Kelaniya Rajamaha Viharaya

Keraniya Rajamaha Viharaya if one of the highly sacred Buddhist temple in Sri Lanka. Sri Lankan Buddhist believes that Load Buddha visited this place during his 3rd visit to Sri Lanka. This was happened on the invitation of King Maniakkika and during the 8th year of his enlightment. Load Buddha’s visit to Sri Padha mountain also happened during this visit upon the request from god Sumana Saman.

According to chronicles, Stupa was built enshrining a gem studded seat, which was used by Load Buddha during his visit.

Throughout the history, this temple was renovated and new additions were done by various kings. This became a prominent Buddhist center in the country during the Kotte kingdom time.

This temple was looted and destroyed by Portuguese who were searching for valuable items. Temple lost the land they belong also. But again king of Kandy was able to do some reconstruction of this temple during the Dutch period in 18th centaury.

Major development to this temple was done by famous donor Mrs Helena Wijewardana in year 1888. Kalaniya temple is famous for the painting of mr. Solius Mendis, one of the highly talented painter at that era.
