Gajaman Nona Statue

Gajaman Nona is famous folk poetess in early 19th century.
The famous Gajaman Nona Statue is located in Nonagama junction, Mathara- Hambanthota (A2) main road. This junction was named as "Nana Gama Junction" to tribute this reputed poetess.

The real name of Gajaman Nona is “Dona Isabella Koraneliya Perumal”. She was born in year 1758 and lived in southern province . Gajaman Nona became famous character in old day Sri Lankan literature due to her skills in poetry. She lived only 56 years and passed away in year 1814.

This status was built in year 1982 under patronage of former president mr. Ranasinghe Premadasa. You can notice the specialty of her dress. Some of the Sri Lankan women wore this long sleeved blouse and ankle length skirt, which is belonging to Dutch era style.
