Thissamaharama Rajamaha Viharaya

Thissamaharama Temple is one the 16 most prominent places of old day Buddhist pilgrimage to be visited. It’s believed that Load Buddha visited this place during his third visit to Sri Lanka. This Stupa is located in middle of the Thissmaharama town and can be easily access from public transportation. Devotees who are visiting Katharagama, usually stop at this place.

The Thissmaharama Stupa is the most highly sacred Buddhist attraction in the area. This gigantic stupa was constructed in the site where load Buddha visited with 500 arahants. It has height of 156 feet and 550 feet circumference. Same as Yatala Stupa , this stupa also in Bubble shape and constructed on granite square shaped platform. Its believed that the fontal bone relic of load Buddha was enshrine in this Stupa, but it’s debatable.

Its believed that construction of Thissa Stupa was done by King Kawanthissa in 1st century. Some even believed that this was initially constructed by King Mahanaga, who ruled Ruhuna kingdom in 3rd century BC. King Mahanaga is a brother of king Devanampiyathissa (Anuradhapaura kingdom) and the first king in Ruhuna Kingdom. In that era, Thissamaharama temple was a largest Buddhist monastery in the area.

This site was kept neglected for a long time with the fall of Ruhunu kingdom. The recent restoration work started by most venerable Wepathaira Sumana thero in year 1858. After the death of Sumana thero, the restoration work was completed in 1878 with the guidance from Walpita Medhankara Thero.

You may have noticed that there are some steel rings are tied around are around the stupa. There were some cracks appeared around the dome and this steel support established year 1998 to prevent occurrence of any further cracking.
