Nallur Kandaswamy Kovil is located nearly 2 km away from the Jaffna city center, by the Jaffna Point Pedro road. This temple is considered as the most prominent Hindu religious attraction in the Jaffna peninsula. The annual Nallur Kovil festival attracts thousands of devotee not only Sri Lanka, but also from rest of the world.

Nallur Kovil is devoted to Hindu god Load Murugan. The areas of Nallur was the capital of early Jaffna regional kingdom. Still you can see the some remaining royal monuments such as Sankili Thoppu and other monuments very close to this temple.

According to the historical facts, the initial Nallur Kovil was constructed in year 948 and some development work done in 13th century during King Kalinga Magha time. Later this was renovated by prince Sapumal ( son of King Parakramabahu vi) after conquering the Jaffna. Later Portuguese captured this area and completely demolished the Kovil in year 1621. The present kovil was started during the Dutch time in 1734

There is a special dress code to enter to this Kovil. Men must enter without any shirt and ladies needs wear decently. There are two main entrances to this Kovil has a court yard and a large indoor tank.
