Early days the A9 road via Elephant Pass was the only land supply route to Jaffna Peninsula. Most of the parts in the north of Sri Lanka were under terrorists influence and they controlled the Punarine area. After the war ends in 2009, this bridge was constructed connecting Jaffna and Kilinochchi districts and now this is the second access point to Jaffna. So people have easy access via A32 road Jaffna –Mannar road and the travel time is significantly reduced.

The structural design of this bridge is quite different to other bridges we usually see in other parts in the island. This curvature shape looks similar to the fly over bridge we see in Paliagoda over the Kandy railway line. Due to this curvature, fishing boats can move under the bridge without any disturbance.
