Independence Memorial Hall is located in the Independence Square at Colombo 7. This place is known as Torrington Square in early days. This Hall was built for the commemoration of the independence from British in 1948. But the construction of was started after the Independence.

This Hall is based on the architecture of the Audience Hall( Magul Maduwa) located in Kandy. The column and pilers are decorated with traditional Sri Lankan designs and statues of lions are placed around the the building.

Statue of late Hon. D.S Senanakaya, the first Prime minister of Sri Lanka is located in front of this monument.

Independence Memorial Museum
Most of the visitors missed the museum located in the basement of the Independence Memorial Hall. This is recently renovated and displays many status of the national heroes, who contribute to get the freedom from British government.
Section of this museum is dedicated for the war heroes, who dedicated their life for the 30 year long war against the Tamil Terrorists. Their names were written in "Puskola Poth" and displayed.
Independence Memorial Museum Open Time: 9.00 a.m. to 5.00 p.m.
Sundays, Mondays and all public holidays.
