To generate economical wind energy, the site should have continuous strong and constant air flow to run the turbines. Usually these turbines has capacity of of 600 kW to 5 MW of rated power.
All five Wind Turbine in Hambanthota
Due to its location, Hanbanthota was identified as a suitable location for wind energy harvesting. So Hambanthota was the first location in Sri Lanka, where wind turbines were established. This was done in year 1999/2000. There are 5 NEG Micon M1500-600 wind turbines with the capacity of 600 kW of power rating. Currently 3 MW of electricity generated form Hambanthta district alone.
These system are connected CEB's national grid. You can see wind turbines from far when you are traveling in the Hambanthota main road.
