Kaluthara Bodhiya - view from the Kaluthrara bridge
Kaluthra Bodhiya is the most prominent Buddhist temple in the city of Kaluthra. Those who travel via the Galle road, used to stop here for few second to pay their respect to the Bodhiya and do some offerings.
Wata da ge type pagoda on the upper level
This holy site consists of two sections, located by either side of the Galle road. The lower section, bounded by the Kalu gaga, railway track and the Galle road.
Its belived that boo tree in the upper level is one of the 32 saplings, taken from Jaya Siri Maha Bodhi in Anuradapura. Those 32 saplings are commonly known as Dethis Pala Bodhis.
During the 16th century, this site was used as a fort by Portuguese. Later Dutch and British also use this site a camp. The British Government Agents house was located in this premises at that time.
Major contribution for the development of this site was done by Sir. Siril De Soysa. He started the "Kaluthara Bodhi Society", with the intension of developing this site as Buddhist religious place.

The construction of the famous "Wata da ge" style large pagoda was started in 1964. Construction was completed and open for devotees in 1976. Devotees can visit inside of this large pagoda and worship the small pagoda is located in the middle.

Many devotes visit this place daily and special programs are conducted on every poya day. Currently this site is managed by "Kaluthara Bodhi Trust".
This is the most highest point of the area and you can see the horizon over the sea from one side and greenery beside the Kalu Gaga at the other side.
